Mandela Initiative research: Summaries of findings
A Community of Practice must be strategically aligned to government policies aimed at addressing key social challenges and problems. Such a community has emerged through the Mandela Initiative’s research programme funded by the National Research Foundation and led by recipients of the South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI), an NRF and Department of Science and Technology partnership. These SARChI Research Chairs hosted a two-day Community of Practice workshop on 8 and 9 May 2017 to discuss the research results and debate their policy implications with key actors from relevant government and non-governmental agencies. Below are summaries of the studies which were presented at this gathering.
Daily practices of informality amidst urban poverty

Grappling with poverty and inequality: A report on the process and findings of the Mandela Initiative
The work of the Mandela Initiative spanned 2013 – 2018 and included guidance from a Think Tank of prominent individuals; research on the Initiative’s themes led by nine DST-NRF Research Chairs, 23 Action Dialogues with academics, government, civil society and the private sector. The outcomes of these three pillars of the Initiative’s work were consolidated into a draft synthesis report, which informed multi-sectoral deliberations at a national workshop in February 2018, whereafter the draft report was revised into the final report.
